Study Abroad: Croatia - Social Work in Post-War Conflict

This page highlights my immersive experience in Croatia in the summer of 2025. I did an honors contract while studying abroad that explored themes of social resilience, historical memory, community healing, and cultural richness. Each section below explains and shows a different site I visited or activity I volunteered for. At the bottom of this page, I linked my honors contract e-portfolio from Croatia. Vukovar

Vukovar is a city in eastern Croatia located along the Danube River, known for its tragic role in the Croatian War of Independence. Severely damaged during the 1991 siege, it now stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and remembrance. During our time in Vukovar we visited the Vukovar City Museum and the Memorial Graveyard for the fallen citizens or soldiers during the siege.

Old Town - Osijek

Old Town in Osijek gave us a meaningful look at Croatia’s complex and layered past. Walking through the cobblestone streets and seeing the remains of the old fortress helped us better understand the region’s historical importance and how it contributed to the development of Croatian identity. One of the most memorable parts of the visit was touring a museum that shared personal stories from local residents. Hearing their experiences—stories of perseverance, cultural pride, and everyday life after the war—made the history feel real and personal. It showed us that history isn’t just preserved in architecture or landmarks, but also in the lived experiences and voices of the people who continue to shape the community.

Aljmas

Aljmaš is a peaceful village nestled along the Danube River in eastern Croatia, known for its natural beauty and spiritual calm. During our visit, we spent time at a host family's weekend house, where we reflected on our journey, shared a homemade meal of sarma, and celebrated the connections we had built throughout the program. We picked fresh fruit, played games, and took a quiet walk by the river—moments that allowed us to slow down, appreciate community, and find joy in simplicity.

University of Osijek

During our visit to the University of Osijek, we gained insight into Croatia’s education system while also exploring social work through a local lens. We participated in a collaborative discussion with students from both Indiana University and the University of Osijek, where we examined and compared current social challenges in Croatia and the United States, including mental health, substance use, and access to community resources. The conversation was thoughtful and eye-opening, and it resonated with many of us. In fact, several students continued talking even after the session ended, building meaningful connections that went beyond the academic setting.

Dog Adoption Community Event - Drava River

Just across from Old Town, along the Drava River, we attended a local dog adoption event that turned out to be about much more than helping pets find homes. It was a powerful example of community involvement and support. Families, students, and volunteers gathered for a common purpose, creating an inviting and positive atmosphere. The event highlighted the strong sense of unity and connection that exists within the Osijek community.

Reflection

Croatia E-Portfolio

Studying abroad in Croatia pushed me outside of my comfort zone in ways that helped me grow both academically and personally. As an honors student, I’m used to challenging coursework, but this experience challenged me in a different way—it asked me to think globally, engage with new perspectives, and reflect more deeply on the social and cultural systems I’ve learned about in class. Being immersed in a different country made concepts like history, community, and social responsibility feel real instead of just theoretical. Personally, I became more independent, adaptable, and open-minded. Navigating a new environment, building connections with people from different backgrounds, and stepping into unfamiliar conversations strengthened my confidence and sense of purpose. Overall, studying abroad in Croatia didn’t just add to my academic journey—it reshaped how I see the world and my role in it.
