-Compared to similar events in the U.S., this felt less transactional and more relational. In America, events often feel individual-focused, but in Osijek, the sense of togetherness and shared responsibility really stood out.

-I learned that public spaces in Croatia aren’t just places to walk or pass through—they’re gathering spots for connection, celebration, and civic action. The Drava River served as both a scenic backdrop and a symbol of community life because we went to multiple community events on the river
Across from Old Town, along the banks of the Drava River, we attended a local dog adoption event that offered more than just a chance to find pets new homes—it was a vibrant display of community in action. Families, students, and volunteers came together in support of a shared cause, creating a warm and welcoming environment that reflected the deep sense of connection within Osijek.
This event, like many others we experienced in Croatia, highlighted a powerful contrast to the individualism often felt in American communities. In Osijek, outreach felt genuine and collective—people weren’t just showing up for an event, they were showing up for each other. It reminded me that community isn’t just a concept; it’s something that’s actively practiced and deeply valued here.
